Sarah Palin's Moral Compass

Catchy Song About Sarah
There are many important issues going on in our world right now; environmental degradation, a devastating war, human rights violations, economic turmoil, etc. So why am I writing about Sarah Palin? Because there is something terribly shady about that woman, which compells me to warn others about her questionable morals and frightening aspirations.
Here is a brief list, in no particular order, of some reasons the thought of Sarah Palin as VP is enough to keep me up at night:
1. Her phantom pregnancy: There are a few facts about Palin's latest pregnancy that just don't add up. For one, why didn't she have any of the physical characteristics of a pregnant women when she was supposedly seven months pregnant (Anchorage Daily News article from March 2008)? Also, why had Bristol reportedly been removed from school because she was suffering from the world's worst case of mono for 4-5 months leading up to Trig's birth (23/6 article from August 2008)? In the days leading up to Trig's birth, Palin also engaged in some suspicious activities, including delivering a speech in Dallas AFTER she began leaking amniotic fluid. And then, instead of doing what any sensible 44-year old woman about to give birth to a down syndrome baby would do by hitching a ride to the nearest hospital, Palin flew to Seattle, and then flew to Anchorage, and then her husband drove her 50 miles to a hospital in Wasilla with no natal care unit for babies with down syndrome, although a much more suitable hospital was located 6 miles from the airport (Political Base blog posting from September 2008). And why did she go back to work three days after the baby was born?
Some say that Trig is definitely Sarah Palin's baby because the risks for down syndrome are much higher when the mom is 40+, and Bristol is allegedly 5 months pregnant now, which wouldn't be possible if she gave birth April 18. I think there is still a lot of evidence supporting the fact that Bristol is Trig's mom, since we don't know for sure that she is currently 5 months pregnant, but even if Sarah is indeed the mother, why would she value her political aspirations above the health and well being of her baby? Either Sarah's most recent pregnancy is a horrendous lie, or it demonstrates a complete lack of judgement--either way, she has some serious issues.
2. Her views on abortion and abstinence-only sex ed: I, fortunately, have never been in a situation where I needed to terminate a pregnancy, but I know of several people who have, and their lives would be very different today if they didn't have the freedom to make that decision. Although I'm not a big fan of abortion (who is?), I think every woman should have the freedom to make this decision for herself, rather than having the government make the decision for her. The McCain camp has pointedly said that it's "Bristol's decision" to keep her baby, yet if this election goes their way, no other 17-year old girls who never learned about condoms because they've only be taught to say "no" while their hormones said otherwise, will be able to make that decision. And while we're on the subject, abstinence only sex education? How could she possibly think that's a good idea? Especially after it failed her daughter so miserably. This tells me that Palin is either hopelessly out of touch, or pandering to the religious right... or both. In any case, there are far more important issues going on in the world than pro-life versus pro-choice debates--so why would McCain choose a running mate who focuses so heavily on this issue? Wouldn't someone with a better grasp on economics have been a wiser choice?
3. Lies about the bridge to nowhere: Although Palin claimed to have rejected funds for the infamous "bridge to nowhere" at the RNC, she initially supported the project, which garnered a $223 million earmark in 2005 (Reuters article from September 2008). Although construction of the bridge was cancelled in September 2007, the State of Alaska never returned the federal funds. $223 million is a lot of money to squander on absolutely nothing.
4. Poor judgement: Palin made a slew of ethically-questionable decisions during her run as Mayor of Wasilla; dismissing department heads who didn't seem sufficiently loyal, spearheading a movement to ban books from the library, and then endorsing the candidate who ran for mayor against her mother in law at the end of her term, because of her mother in law's pro-choice stance and affiliation with the Democratic party (Time article from September 2008). Then, when she became governor, she fired the public safety commisioner, Walt Monegan, because he refused to fire her ex brother in law (TPM article from August 2008).
There are also a couple of videos I've seen of Sarah prophesying like she's the second coming of Christ. I'll need to hunt those down and add them to the post.
The MSM seems to be going out of their way to convince us that Palin is a brilliant pick for VP--I think it was the nail in the McCain campaign's proverbial coffin. Speaking of coffins, if McCain somehow weasled his way into office and later succumbed to one of the many illnesses listed in his 200+ page medical report... how would you like to have Sarah Palin as our commander in chief?

Hey Melissa! Don't you know better than to mess with a conservative, self-righteous, and sanctified Christian who's obviously a Republican? He'll leave you burning in hell. In all seriousness, blangrehr, I only responded to your sarcasm with my own, but in my fear and love for God, I completely respect your religious beliefs. I also want to mention that Melissa was respectful enough to not stand on a soapbox and spit out just her feelings on Palin, but she listed articles as well. As far as abortion, I am against it, but since I am for God, I believe in free will and since I do, no one is in the position to tell a woman or a girl what to do with their body. I didn't see you defend Palin's spending habits in office, her book ban, her office politics or even her stance that the war in Iraq is "God's plan". Now I ask you who are a Palin supporter to respectfully defend her forementioned actions.
You did not see me address any of that stuff because non of it happened. Made up lies by a petulant MSM. Spare me the rationalization of your beliefs. Forget religion and God, for a moment if you want to. Nobody, should have a right to kill innocent babies at will. Why then do women get prosecuted for anything. Is it against the iaw to use cocaine? Even for a women, why is that do you think? Is it against the law to attempt to kii yourself, why is that do you think? Come on, for a woman those things should be perfectly legal, right, it her body and she should have the right to do with it as she wants. For that matter, do men not have the right to do what they want to with their body...drugs, rape, it's all a personal choice.
Yep, the nicest person I know: a couple of quotes from your article: "Jesus Christ get to a Goddamn hospital" nice, and this "And while we're on the subject, abstinence only sex education? How could she possibly think that's a good idea? Especially after it failed her daughter so miserably." how is having a wonderful little baby considered a miserable failure? thats a nice person?
Gosh. Only three posts, and already very heated! Melissa, I can't vote in this election because I'm in the UK, but I'm with you on this one. I don't believe that being a mother precludes you from high office, but I do believe that once you are a mother, that should be your number one priority. As to being anti-abortion. Well can there be any woman who actually relishes the idea of abortion? But pregnancy is no picnic, and no woman should be forced to go through with such a life changing (and potentially life-threatening) experience in difficult or dangerous circumstances. We should, instead, direct our energies into making the lives of those children already in the world as happy, peaceful and fulfilling as we possibly can. Ultimately the election will reflect the decisions of the American people, and I hope for the sake of world peace and harmony, that the right man or woman gets the relevant jobs. Only history will tell for sure.
I see, it’s okay to murder a child, or fetus if it makes you feel better, but it’s bad to snort Cocaine, according to you, a women should be able to make all decisions about her body, why is using drugs part of effects on her body? Because you say so? Because you are not the author alleviates you of any responsibility of content, wow, you live such a charmed life. “And while we're on the subject, abstinence only sex education? How could she possibly think that's a good idea? Especially after it failed her daughter so miserably.” This is your quote; how did abstinence fail Bristol? She is going to have a baby…which is a truly wonderful thing…and there are no more important issues or subjects to use our energies on than our children. (unborn means un-conceived, in which case would be a thought, or a dream for a better person) I’ll not further bother you, I will forever be amazed at how you look in the mirror.; talk about darkness and destruction; 40 million babies, that's alot of darkness and destruction.
I'm more worried about her running mate, the John McCain we hear so little about any more. He has obviously found a winning personality in Sarah Palin that so many people will accept her as a qualified candidate simply because she agrees with the Conservative Right. But in the end, John McCain is running for president.
palin can obviously afford to delagate the 'life long chore' of constant attendance for her less then normal child to a lesser person... to bad about those she influences that realizes too late about such a bold ignorant choice...
Melissa, I share all your fears and concerns about Palin. The fact that she was chosen by McCain is a terrifying example of what kind of decision-making we can expect should these two be elected. The Gibson interview was so disturbing. Charlie Gibson is one of the biggest slow pitch softball players in TV news--I fully expected him to have a warm fuzzy chat with her and pitch her a few easy ones, and in truth, he didn't ask anything all that hard--and yet, in spite of that, she really blew it so badly that on more than on occasion he got visibly irritated with her. She is so poorly versed in foreign policy she didn't understand some of his questions. Didn't even know what he was asking her.
It's amazing that the very first comment you got on this hub is such a brilliant example of why we should all vote Obama and get every single person we know to vote Obama. People who profess to love unborn babies so much and yet are seething with hatred for other adults. I've rarely seen such naked hatred come out of anyone the way I see it come out of the Christian right. Whoever they think they worship, it can't possibily be the Jesus of the New Testament. They don't seem to have read that book, they just beat other people over the head with it.
Great hub, thank you.
I liked this hub and I fully support your view about Sarah Palin. I need to admit that I really like her amazing look - appearance! However, she is not a world TOP politician and she will never be! She is truly not capable to win the intellectual clash with Vladimir Putin and alike from the 'dark side of the force'. She could continue Bush-Cheney legacy and create wars all over, but that is far away from any reasonable solution.
Dear Melissa G, there is a button on HubPages, which allows you to delete any comment which could be persistently annoying to any of your hubs:)
Whoa - I'm surprised at all the hate for Palin when we really don't know yet who she really is. I found some of your hub interesting and appreciate the links of reference. The one reference about Trig not being her baby was more like something out a rag sheet though and not too reliable. Overall I agree with Chef Jeff, we should be focusing more on John McCain and the type of president he might make since he is the one running. Yes, the VP choice is important but all the focus has been on Palin. I question her ability as a VP too, but I am more worried about McCain as president. And to be fair - I'm not all that sure of the Obama/Biden ticket either!
Hi Melissa G I love your article :) you make a lot sense about Sarah Palin. A woman who doesn't have the sense to go to the hospital when her water break, doesn't need to be in the White House. Maybe her slow thinking had something to do with her baby problem. I only hope she did not do it on purpose, or maybe it not her baby. and blangrehr what is your problem :( I know your voting for Mccain even though he only cares about winning, which could cost the American people.
Wonderful aricle. Thanks for writing it. I also share the same concerns about Palin's character and moral compass. I have nothing against Mothers who work, but going back to a 12 hour day job 2 (you said 3 but I heard it was 2) days aftr your baby w/ Downs is born just really bothers me. I used to teach Downs children and theey are extremely needy and fragile infants. The majority do not even survive pregnancy, that's how fragile they are. That baby needs his mother right now and I find it all incredibly selfish and lacking in any 'family values' that I value. And continuing a specch after her water broke so far from her home and jumping on an 8 hour flight just makes me mad at how reckless that was for the baby. And she apparenly is proud of it.. stating later more than once, "I wasn't going to miss that speech!". Thank God everything turned out all right, but she clearly doesn't put her children first. I recently had a baby and wanted to fly at 61/2 mnths and was told by my Doc I shouldn't... and, of course, I listened. She displays almost a wonton disregard for her family and her role as a Mother.......very selfish if you ask me. Definitely not my idea of a good Mother. You brought up other good points too, but this alone bothers me more than anything else. Something is not right here at all.
Love the hub...to me the only good solution to having Palin in the White House would be to have Tina Fey play her (who was brilliant on the SNL opener) there too.
Palin has definitely taken the focus off of McCain and come on kids, isn't that JUST what the Republican party wanted? Guess what? It worked. Now what are the Democrats going to do besides throwing up their hands, playing the victim again and possibly lose the election again???
After all, no one seems to want to make an action figure of Joe Biden!
"unborn means un-conceived" ???? Good grief. Good hub, but it worries me so much that M/P supporters seem to be so close minded. I wonder if blangrerh thinks miscarred babies were unconcieved. And why is it so hard for the religious right to understand that pro-choice supporters do not equate abortion with murder? It just seems logic has nothing to do with politics in our good ole USA. While I cannot imagine anyone voting for M/P, I am deeply concerned we are about to repeat the Bush selection mistake.
Melissa. The flow chart is absolutely great! I love it!
Your best bet with blangrehr is to completely ignore. Complete basket case TROLL. Harasses anyone who isn’t a burn-the-infidels-at-the-stake fundamentalist or a fascist corporatist. Doesn’t know how to say “let’s just agree to disagree”. Alleged “christians” such as blangrehr are fully interchangeable with radical muslim jihadists. Just exchange Allah for God and everything else remains the same. If this information was being spread about Michelle Obama it would be quite another matter.
Don’t waste your time or effort trying to engage this person in a rational discussion. It simply isn't possible.
You’re completely correct in your evaluation of Palin. Beyond any of that, she simply is completely without qualification for the position.
By the way, if anyone thinks that McCain had anything to do with choosing her, think again. I doubt he even knew who she was until he was informed that she was his running mate.
Here’s quick-pick to show what sort of people are actually making the decisions for McCain.

Excellent Hub Melissa and always ignore trolls. It’s the only way to silence them.
I also saw a snippet of her saying the war on Iraq was God's decision, and I couldn't finish watching the interwiew; it scares me to think of a McCain and Palin team. This is not a statement of course in saying they are "bad" or "good" people, they are just not the right people to bring healing to our country. I support your hub, good one!
What a trashy hub with no facts just trash.
Blackberry has been a member for six months, publised ZERO Hubs and has no photo on profile.
Gee, I wonder if there's any possibility the Blackberry might be a TROLL.
This is an excellent Hub and the facts are clear for anyone with enough sense to see them.
As the founder of the Emergency Troll Alert Team, ahm jest doin' mah job mam.
Well thought out hub Melissa. Right now so many people are trying to disparage Obama and Biden and their achievements in order to detract from Sarah Palin and her notoriety.
WOW, WHAT A "HATER", I WAS GOING TO VOTE OBAMA, BUT AFTER READING THIS BUTT LOAD OF BS THAT IS SO FAR FROM THE TRUTH....MY VOTE IS FOR MC CAIN/ PALIN NOW...
Melissa, great, well-presented and factually-correct hub! Anyone who is REALLY interested in the Truth can easily check the facts for themselves.. if the Truth is what they're really interested in.
All you can do is present the facts as they are in the light of day. You cannot broaden the narrow minds of those who prefer the uncertainty of shadows. You are wasting your time and causing yourself undue frustration and aggrivation.
A wise man, I forget exactly who, said "There are none so blind as those who will not see."
When I first heard that I was young and didn't get it. Since then, MANY years ago, I have watched the validity of that saying prove itself to be true right in front of my eyes... many, many times.
Educate those who WANT to learn. Ignore those who do not. That is not a choice you think you have. It is the only thing you can actually do.
OK, I'm done... resume the mutual insultage (yes, I made that word up!).
I heard a simple phrase a few years ago which is said to help broaden a closed mind, and I thought about it and realised how reluctant we typically are to use it.
The phrase is; "I could be wrong."
Much that has happened in the last four weeks that proves how prescient you were in your opening paragraph. In her recent rallies, there have been reports of people crying "traitor," "liar," and even "off with his head," when she or McCain mention Obama and she has done nothing to assuage those cries. One does not even have to be a Christian to realize that is wrong regardless of how righteous your position. I think you bring up valid points that must be discussed with regard to the candidates forthrightness. Great hub Melissa.

Like many, I have been sifting through the growing pile of circumstantial evidence that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's fifth child, Trig, might be her daughter's child rather than her own.
I didn't write about this both because I was not convinced of the allegations, and I couldn't do more than add a decibel level to a growing sound machine that was convincing itself that there was significant, perhaps well meaning, fraud involved here. That would not have been a constructive contribution.
I have seen other cases in which a mountain of evidence points in one direction -- but that turned out to be wrong. It seemed to me that there were potential explanations that fit Palin's character, and in these personal cases, she deserved better than the blogosphere's doubt.
Andrew Sullivan has finally helped end the dizzying frenzy, I hope. He links a photo of Palin (above) on "what was the last day of the Alaska Legislature's Session, on April 13, 2008, five days before Trig Palin was born."
I think that there are other legitimate questions for the McCain-Palin team and the Obama-Biden team that deserve our attention. And I hope we can move beyond this story about Trig's real mom now.
Thanks to Andrew Sullivan and those who helped dig a bit further than the photos and narratives on hand and for their general sobriety about this uncomfortable subject.
Off to Minneapolis/St. Paul now.

I just wanted to add the if you go to the post, u can see the actual dated photo for yourselves. Also, a great president once said, "if you are a conservative at 20, then u have no heart" and "If you are a liberal at 40, then u have no brains!"
Lively discussions!
UPDATE 1: A picture that the conspiracy theorists aren’t posting with their outlandish claims. This is reportedly a picture taken 8 days before Trig was born, and Sarah sure looks pregnant to me!
UPDATE 2: The family photo above was reportedly taken in 2006, debunking the rumors that Bristol was pregnant in late 2007 and early 2008.
The image below was posted by a writer on The Daily Kos to help debunk the Sarah Palin pregnancy lies. She looks awfully pregnant to me! The writer rightfully points out that the other Kos blogger who was promoting the horrible lies didn’t post pictures like this because it didn’t fit the lie that was being promoted. You got that right!
UPDATE 3: And this picture was posted at HotAir.com, again debunking the lie that Sarah Palin wasn’t really pregnant with Trig.
No problem! Go McCain and Palin!
html links not allowed. Google Sarah Palin pregnancy! Loads of articles and evidence. Pretty darn low to say her 15 year old daughter gave birth to a downs baby, dont' ya think?
actuallly, go to another web re my last comment...from political mommy...it was pasted from "Read My Lipstick" a webblog supporting McCain and Palin. Hope this information helps you search for truth!
PAtty
Wow. Everyone knows that the only source of "truth" is the X-Files website!
"The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. The opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth." ~~ [William Blake]
Great hub Melissa!
are u a mom? And do you work? If you are a mom, is one of your children affected with a special need? Unlsee you are, you shouldn't judge. Actually, you shouldn't judge period, if you are a liberal. I am for McCain and Palin because I believe as a mom i want a kinder, more moral world, for my children....and as a mom, who also works p/t, i totally relate to Sarah Palin....right down to having children affected with life-long chronic health matters that impinge on their overall quality of life. By the way, as a mom you would lay your life down for your child, and do anything to make the world, their wolrd, better....that is what Sarah Palin is tyring to do alongside Senator McCain.
God Bless You
Thank goodness we don't have to worry about this anymore! I couldn't be happier with our new Prez! :D
I'm with Justmesuzanne. I hope the Palin Phenom is over and that she will not find her way back to the national spotlight. Her brand of politics may play well in a sparsely populated state like Alaska. However, America is too big, and the world is too sophisticated, for her simplistic thinking and pandering. Winking at the audience might get you selected beauty queen. But vice president of the United States is a serious, serious job.

Wow, how righteous you are, you decided Mrs. Palin is a terrible mother and a person. Oh and sure, a woman should have the right to murder a defenseless innocent baby, because sometimes it would be inconvenient to have a baby…no problem just kill it. You are so right she is the devil, she’s a mother, and she loves her kids, pathetic; she’s a wife and she loves her husband, sickening; she was a Mayor, OMG; she ran for and was elected Governor, what in the world where most of the people of Alaska thinking? You know the people that actually live there. Wait let’s not forget, she’s a Christian; everybody knows that if you believe in God you are a worthless piece of trash. After-all, it’s her fault she has a baby with disabilities…a smart person, a woman able to be President would have certainly aborted that imperfect waste. Wow can you believe anybody would admire this person…well I do, I thank God for Sarah Palin. And on this day of all days, your hate, bigotry, and ignorance makes me sad for my country, and very, very sad for you.
